Our slice of peace

In December 2005 we purchased a charming old cottage in a hamlet called La Bourbouille. The house has three bedrooms, an open plan-dining area, open fire, wood burning stove, 2 bathrooms, large sun terrace, a small kitchen and a variety of interesting cellars and rooms under the main house. It came with a ‘spare house’ - a tiny cottage attached. Built of stone a long time ago, the original farmhouse was refurbished in the 1970s with new floors. We have added the modern bathrooms, hot water throughout and a new roof on the spare cottage.

The layout is basically kitchen, dining room and lounge downstairs, leading to a double bedroom with en-suite shower and toilet. Upstairs is the main bedroom and second bathroom, plus the upstairs ‘sitting room/third bedroom’. The sun terrace leads off the lounge, with further stairs going down to the walled courtyard and gate to the lane outside. The front door opens into the kitchen area. Of course, all the windows have traditional shutters, and we also have a (non functional) traditional bread oven too.

The house is pretty sound (especially now we have upgraded the electrics, and added the luxuries of hot water, new cooker, fridge, TV, DVD and so on!)

Conveniently located 1.5 hrs drive from the airports of Carcassonne or Montpellier, the house is in the hamlet of La Bourbouille. It is 2 hrs to the airports of Nimes and Perpignan - so there is plenty of choice as to where to fly to. At a pinch, Toulouse would do.  We tend to fly Ryanair from East Midlands to Carcassonne, or from Stansted or Luton. You can get to Perpignan from Gathwick via BA connect, but I detest Gatwick (or rather the drive there). From whichever airport we arrive at, we just take the motorway to Beziers, then drive inland for half an hour!

Around and about

La Bourbouille has about 20 inhabitants, and is not on any map we have found! There are no shops, no bar - everything is very quiet. However, just 5kms away you have the local bar La Chantier in Herepian, the  Belleville hotel restaurant in Lamalou.

Lamalou also has various spa centres, shops and restaurants, a golf course with excellent restaurant and even a cinema and casino. 10km from the house is Bedarieux, with walks along the river, lots of shops, a local market, and the wonderful restaurant of La Forge. Bedarieux has a railway station too...I could go on, but just look at the pictures...

La Bourbouille is just in the mountains, with glorious views and walks, and an hours’ drive inland takes you to the lakes of La Raviage. Alternatively, drive for an hour in the other direction and hit the beaches of Valras Plage, Agde or Sete. Or head right as you come out of Lamalou to see the pretty town of Rocquebrun or the Gorges D’Heric. Beziers is the nearest big town, with the Canal Du Midi and famous locks (les neufs ecluses), big market square and of course the rugby stadium. Further afield we are allegedly only 2.5 hrs drive from the Pyrenees and skiing, whilst Barcelona is 3 to 4hrs drive.

All in all, a fantastic location, any time of year, whatever we fancy doing. If only we could spend more time there!

Building Work!

When we bought the house, the only hot water in the house was in the shower room downstairs - powered by a gas bottle heater in one of the rooms under the house. So no hot water in the kitchen or upstairs. In fact, the only toilet was upstairs. So, we had the electrics upgraded, and an electric water system installed to power two new bathrooms - one upstairs, one downstairs -plus the kitchen. Whilst we were at it, we had toilets installed upstairs and downstairs, plus a new roof on the spare house'. We then had a velux window put in upstairs and did a whole heap of decorating. Looking much better now and nothing like camping anymore! Check out the photo album.
